If you asked your guests to name the most important part of a vacation rental, the bedroom would likely be at the top of the list—perhaps tied with the bathroom. A comfortable, thoughtfully decorated, and relaxing bedroom is key to satisfied guests and glowing reviews. Investing in high-quality elements, like mattresses and bedding, can make a huge difference, as they are essential for a restful night’s sleep. After all, if a guest sleeps well at your Airbnb, there’s a good chance they’ll highlight it in their review—and we all want those glowing 5-star ratings, right? Don’t worry! In this guide, you’ll find simple tips to transform your rental’s bedrooms into snug, inviting retreats.
1. Choose the Right Bedding
The Basics – The Bed and the Mattress
Without a doubt, the most important part of the room—and the biggest contributor to the guest experience—is the bed itself. Beyond the bed’s quality, consider its dimensions. If the room size allows, opt for the largest bed possible. For smaller bedrooms, a functional bed with built-in storage is a practical choice, offering additional space for guests or your supplies.
Equally important is the mattress. Focus on its quality, size, design, and firmness. Medium-firm to firm mattresses are ideal for vacation rentals, as they suit the widest range of guests and are more durable over time.
Bed linen and Pillows
Never underestimate the importance of quality bed linen when it comes to guest satisfaction. That’s why I suggest providing the highest quality bedding you can afford. For durability and ease of care, white cotton sheets are an excellent option. Not only do they offer a fresh, clean look, but they also provide timeless elegance. Personally, I chose white cotton sateen bed linens for our vacation rental, and they’ve turned out to be a fantastic choice—elegant, stylish, and practical.
Another crucial element of a comfortable sleep experience is pillows. Count at least two pillows per guest: one with a softer filling for a plush feel and another with medium to firm filling for added support. I recommend synthetic fillings because they are hypoallergenic and can be washed at high temperatures. This helps keep things clean and safe for your guests.
2. Focus on Lighting
Layer Your Lighting
Lighting plays a crucial role in creating a welcoming and homey atmosphere in your rental’s bedroom. The right lighting can transform a gloomy space into a relaxing haven, helping your guests feel comfortable. Moreover, good lighting not only makes a room more functional but also adds to its style and atmosphere.
To start, mix several lighting sources to create layers of light. A central ceiling lamp is essential, but bedside lamps are equally important for practicality and coziness. Depending on your rental’s style, you can choose between classic table lamps on the bedside tables or sleek wall-mounted lights on either side of the bed. Adjustable lamps or those with downward-facing shades are great for reducing glare and allowing guests to customize the lighting.
Opt for Soft, Cozy Light
When selecting bulbs, choose soft, warm lighting to set a cozy tone. If possible, opt for dimmable lamps so guests can adjust the brightness. For larger bedrooms, wall sconces can add a touch of elegance and fill the space with warm, ambient light.
Add Decorative Touches
To take the coziness to the next level, consider decorative touches like string lights or fairy lights for a whimsical, inviting glow. Moreover, LED candles are another excellent option if you would like to add a romantic, intimate feel without the risk of open flames. These small, thoughtful lighting choices will make your guests feel right at home—and they might even reward your bedroom with extra compliments in their reviews!
3. Keep It Clutter-Free
Why Clutter-Free Spaces Matter
Clutter can make a space feel overwhelming and stressful. When there’s too much stuff around, it can raise cortisol levels, which are linked to anxiety. This is certainly not the feeling you want your guests to experience during their stay. A clean, tidy space is ideal for a calm and relaxing environment.
Storage Solutions for a Tidy Airbnb
To maintain this peaceful atmosphere, make sure your Airbnb has enough storage options. These could include a built-in wardrobe, closet, or drawers, depending on the size and design of your short-term rental. If you have a smaller room, a clothes rail can be a great option—it’s stylish, functional, and also works as a replacement for a wardrobe.
Stylish and Functional Storage Ideas
For extra functional storage, under-bed boxes or drawers are excellent. They’re perfect for storing extra sheets and linens and also for keeping seasonal items out of sight. And now, the storage option I’m most excited about: rattan baskets! I just love using them—they’re so practical and look lovely. Honestly, I’d put them everywhere! They work well as rustic decor and also add a cozy feel to the room. For example, I use a huge one in the bedroom of our Airbnb as a storage place for our extra pillows. It looks so charming—a perfect blend of style and function.
4. Add Calming Elements
Create a Calm Vibe with the Right Colors
This is where you can truly transform your Airbnb from ordinary into a cozy, inviting haven. Use decor elements that promote calmness and relaxation. Prioritize a pastel or neutral color palette, as they naturally create a peaceful atmosphere. Soft Textiles for a Cozy Ambience
Aside from lighting, soft textiles play the biggest role in creating a snug, welcoming ambience. Add throw blankets and pillows in different fabrics and textures within a cohesive color scheme. I Personally love using natural materials like linen and cotton for decorating. Rugs are another great way to boost coziness, especially if you have tiled floors for practicality or style.
Add Greenery and Artworks
To enhance the homely feel, consider adding a low-maintenance plant, such as a snake plant. As for decor elements, artworks are another great way to complete that picture-perfect bedroom. I always recommend going for something unique if possible. Instead of mass-produced paintings, try visiting local art shops for custom-made pieces—they’re often more affordable than you might think. Another idea I love is using old photographs as decor. For instance, I decorated the bedroom of our vacation rental with beautiful black-and-white photos of Trogir, the city where our rental is located. Etsy is also a fantastic place to find unique treasures for your Airbnb at an affordable price.
5. Make It Personal
Now it’s time for the finishing touches—and they’re just as important as the rest! Imagine your guest’s smile when they find beautifully made bedding, perfectly arranged towels at the foot of the bed, and a piece of chocolate on the bedside table. These small gestures can make a big difference in your guests’ experience.
To complete the homey vibe, leave one or two good books or a local guide on the bedside table. And for the cherry on top, consider leaving a handwritten welcome note in the room. It’s a small effort that leaves a lasting impression. See? Sometimes, it really doesn’t take much to wow your guests.
Creating a cozy and inviting bedroom for your Airbnb doesn’t have to be complicated. By focusing on comfort, ambiance, and personal touches, you can transform a simple space into a memorable retreat. From quality bedding and thoughtful lighting to clutter-free organization and calming decor, every detail matters. Add those small personal touches—like a welcome note or a piece of chocolate—and you’ll not only awe your guests but also encourage glowing reviews and returning visitors. Remember, a little effort goes a long way in creating a truly unforgettable Airbnb!
